Patient safety measures how well a hospital prevents injuries, infections, and other serious conditions based on 14 serious, potentially preventable adverse events. HEPA Offering Three College Scholarships Totaling $9,000 for Graduating High School Seniors in Hilo and Honokaa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Hilo, May 15, 2019) The Hawaii Emergency Physicians Associated, Inc. (HEPA), the physicians who staff the emergency room at Hilo Medical Center and Hale Ho`ola Hamakua in Honokaa, is offering two (2) $3,000 college scholarships to students in Hilo and one (1) $3,000 college scholarship to students in Honoka`a. New Safety Precautions at Hilo Medical Center’s Emergency Department

In light of the March 20 incident in the Emergency Department, we have updated patient and visitor safety procedures. Staffing for security officers in the Emergency Department has been increased to screen patients and visitors upon entering the Emergency Department at both the main entrance and medic entrance. Security officers are “wanding” patients and visitors to prevent dangerous instruments from entering our Emergency Department. This additional security measure has already produced positive results.
