Hale Ho'ola Hamakua Achieves Five Star Ranking

National ranking places Honokaa’s Hospital among Hawaii’s Top Nursing Homes

Hilo, Hawaii – The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the national rankings for Overall Nursing Home Quality Star Ratings and ranked Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua (HHH) in the top 10% of 46 nursing homes statewide to achieve the five star ranking. HHH is one of over 15,000 Medicare- and Medicaid-participating nursing homes that are included in the nationwide rating for quality of care and staffing information.

“Our entire team in Honoka‘a made great strides in caring for their residents,” said Dan Brinkman, East Hawaii Regional CEO of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. “I thank everyone for achieving this new five star ranking that demonstrates the high quality of services, resulting in better outcomes for the people we care for.”

Nursing homes, both public and private nationwide, participating in CMS are required to track and measure key indicators. The results, published on the CMS Nursing Home Compare website, help millions of patients and their families nationwide learn about the quality of nursing homes, compare facilities in their area side-by-side, and ask important questions about quality of care.

“Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua’s leadership team and I would like to thank and congratulate members of every department for this remarkable achievement,” said Kerry Pitcher, Long Term Care Administrator of Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua.

“Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua serves as the East Hawaii Region’s primary Long Term Care facility. Residents from Hamakua and other parts of Hawaii Island appreciate the excellent care they receive at this attractive, modern facility,” said Kurt Corbin, Board Chair of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation East Hawaii Region. “Our outstanding team of administrators and staff are to be congratulated as they continue a long tradition of quality care for our kupuna.”

Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua’s top ranking along with Hilo Medical Center’s recent honors and accolades recognize important milestones in the transformation in the level of care provided throughout the East Hawaii Region of HHSC.
