Educational Scholarships Available for Hilo Medical Center Staff and Their Immediate Families

The Medical Staff of Hilo Medical Center want to encourage our staff and their family members to pursue careers or enhancements to their careers in health care, in order to provide the highest quality of care possible to the people of Hawaii.  

Therefore, we are pleased to announce the availability of educational scholarships for the Fall school year starting July 1, 2014 or later. Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded for applicants who meet the May 15, 2014 deadline for submission.  

The criteria for receiving these scholarships is as follows:   
  1. Must be a permanent employee of Hilo Medical Center or a relative of the employee (defined as a spouse, domestic partner as recognized by the State of Hawaii, sibling, child, grandchild, or legally adopted child or grandchild).  Physicians and their family members are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.         
  2. Must demonstrate academic excellence and potential by one of the following methods: (Multiple methods are not required but are encouraged)                        
    • high school or college transcript            
    • letter of recommendation from an individual with direct knowledge of the applicant’ academic performance or performance in a health care related job. (Letters cannot be from a relative of the applicant.)
  3. Applicants must complete and submit the attached application, including the personal statement by 5/15/2014 to the Medical Staff Services Department, Hilo Medical Center, 1190 Waianuenue Avenue, Hilo, HI 96720. Applications submitted after that date will not be considered.

Applicants will be chosen based on academic merit and potential for contributing to the health of the people of Hawaii. Financial need, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation will not be considered in the decision to award these scholarships. The scholarship is for one academic year only, but candidates can re-apply for subsequent years with demonstration of adequate academic or work performance if the scholarship program continues.
