Senator Brian Schatz Congratulates HHSC Primary Care Training Program for Its Accreditation

Hilo, Hawaii – On December 3, Marlena Castro Dixon, East Hawaii Field Representative for U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, presented Hilo Medical Center officials with a certificate containing the following congratulatory message:

“It is my pleasure to offer my warm congratulations to the Hilo Medical Center on meeting the requirements to receive a 2-year accreditation for the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency Program.

This achievement comes at a time when there is an alarming shortage of physicians in our state. The Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency Program’s accreditation marks a pivotal effort to bring qualified professionals into our hospitals, and to provide them with the exceptional training and resources needed to care for our families. I commend the hard work that went into developing, implementing and advancing this project. Without a doubt, the quality medical care that will occur as a result will benefit many people of Hawaii.”

Senator Schatz’s acknowledgement was welcomed by hospital officials. “We are grateful for the Senator’s recognition and support of our efforts to establish the residency program,” said Howard Ainsley, East Hawaii Regional CEO of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. “I share this milestone with everyone who contributed to the accreditation. We have much more work ahead of us and I look forward to welcoming our first class of residents next summer.”
