Heart Attack & Stroke

signs of stroke

The State of Hawaii has high rates of heart attack and stroke.

Since 2011, Hilo Medical Center has streamlined our communication and medical care among the Hawaii County Fire Department and our Activation Team of doctors, nurses and staff involving the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Laboratory, Imaging and Respiratory Therapy.

The Heart Attack and Stroke Program focuses on educating the community on the signs of a heart and stroke and the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately.

Time is of the essence – the sooner the 9-1-1 call is made, the sooner Hawaii County paramedics can trigger the Activation Team at the hospital before transporting the patient to the Emergency Room.

If the patient is brought in quickly, we can provide clot-busting medication that could save the life of a loved one and help reduce the damaging effects of the heart attack or stroke.
