Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

About Our Services

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), commonly known as the Recovery Room, provides care to patients of all ages who are coming out of anesthesia or sedation after having a surgical or radiologic procedure. There are 6 recovery bays and one procedure bay with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment.

Highly Trained Staff

PACU is staffed by Registered Nurses who are specially trained (with ASPAN standards -  American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurse) to provide intensive observation and care to patients who have undergone anesthesia for elective or emergent procedures. The Anesthesiologist and Surgeon oversee the care provided in the PACU. The nurses closely monitor level of consciousness, breathing and all other vital signs to provide safe care. Recovery nurses also provide relief from pain and nausea as comfort is a priority in the PACU.

What to Expect

Once awake, alert and pain/nausea controlled, the patient will return to the ambulatory surgery unit or be admitted to a hospital room. The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit’s mission is to provide thorough monitoring and meticulous assessment of patients who have undergone procedures that require anesthesia or sedation.

Our Mission

We strive to maintain patient comfort and safety with the collaboration of the health care team (family, anesthesia, primary doctor and all nursing staff).

Community Involvement

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit supports our community in the Relay for Life, EMS run, United Way, American Heart Walk, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Ladies Night Out, and many Hilo Medical Center Foundation activities.
