Ensuring Medication Safety

We are committed to ensuring medication safety at Hilo Medical Center. The process begins with the physician ordering the medication through our electronic medical records system. Our pharmacist verifies the order in the electronic medical records by checking for allergies and dose appropriateness for that specific patient. The nurse on the unit accesses medication from a Pyxis machine, which functions like a vending machine that only allow the nurse to access medications that have been verified by the pharmacist. Upon administration of the medication, the nurse scans a barcode on the patient’s wristband and the medication to ensure the right medication is given to the right patient.
