Ensuring Medication Safety
We are committed to ensuring medication safety at Hilo Medical Center. The process begins with the physician ordering the medication through our electronic medical records system. Our pharmacist verifies the order in the electronic medical records by checking for allergies and dose appropriateness for that specific patient. The nurse on the unit accesses the medication from pyxis machine, which functions like a vending machine that only allow the nurse to access medications that have been verified by the pharmacist. Upon administration of the medication, the nurse scans a barcode on patient’s wristband and the medication to ensure the right medication is given to the right patient.
The Mission Statement of the Department of Pharmacy Services is to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide quality pharmaceutical care that foster efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness to all patients, to advance pharmaceutical knowledge through educational and scholarly activities, and to promote positive patient outcomes.
- To foster a collaborative approach to medication safety among all disciplines.
- To provide an exceptional work environment that will establish HMC as the pharmacy employer of choice.
- To integrate new technological developments which improve efficiency and safety.
- To expand and promote excellence in pharmacy education.
Our pharmacists lend their expertise to the Hilo Medical Center’s Diabetes in Control Program and also participate in a variety of community health fairs.
